Uh‑oh... “Invalid input. You may have stale data; refresh the page and try again.”
How many times have you been in this scenario while working in Google Tag Manager?
You’re deep into tweaking a complex tag—or buried in a huge regex table—when you hit Save and… bam. The dreaded pop-up error shows.
Invalid input. You may have stale data; refresh the page and try again.
You obey, refresh, and all your work is gone. Ouch.
The zero-loss fix for the GTM’s “Invalid input...” error
Heads up: This fix works if it’s a user-side issue (see below). If the issue is on Google’s side—like during maintenance or after a buggy update—you’ll just have to wait it out.
Here’s how to save your edits without losing your work:
- Right‑click the GTM browser tab showing the error and choose Duplicate.
- Let the duplicate load completely, then close it—this refreshes GTM in the background.
- Go back to the original tab and hit Save. Your changes should stick now.

And that’s it, you just saved your changes.
This might seem like a tiny trick, but I spend ~30 hours a week in GTM—and this duplicate-then-save move has rescued more tags, triggers, and variables than I can count.
Why GTM throws this error: Invalid input. You may have stale data; refresh the page and try again.
Why GTM throws this error?
Here are the most common causes:
- You left the container open, came back later, and tried to save → the browser cache fell out of sync with the live version.
- You edited in one tab while another tab with the same container sat idle → GTM detects a version conflict.
- Your VPN dropped or your laptop woke from sleep → the session desynced from GTM’s servers.
Now you know—next time this error hits, skip the refresh and use the “duplicate‑then‑save” trick to save your work.
